VisionTo be a Great Commission Church in the Heart of Kingsport.Purpose StatementThrough faithful evangelism, compassionate ministry and comprehensive discipleship, Calvary Baptist Church proclaims the message of Jesus Christ so that people might establish a personal relationship with Him and grow in their fellowship with him.ValuesWorship: God is worthy of all praise and honor (Psalm 18:3); therefore, we will worship Him with enthusiasm (Psalm 100) and serve Him with excellence (Colossians 3:17).Bible Study: The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God; therefore, we will teach, preach, and learn them diligently, seeking to put these principles and commands into practice in our personal lives and in the life of our church (James 1:21-25).Prayer Ministry: The Work of God can only proceed in the will and the power of God; therefore, we commit to seeking the Lord's direction and empowerment in personal and corporate prayer, petitioning God for our own needs and interceding for the needs of others (Ephesians 6:18-19).Evangelism and Missions: Christ's death was for all people (I John 2:2), and God desires all people everywhere to be saved (II Peter 3:9); therefore, we will share the gospel through personal witnessing, church-wide evangelistic efforts, and cooperative missions through the Sullivan Baptist Association, the Tennessee Baptist Convention, the Southern Baptist Convention, and any other worthy means as seen fit by the church body.Ministry: We are Christ's body, called to follow His example; therefore, we will show His love through active, purposeful ministry to those in need, both within and outside the congregation (I John 3:17-18).Community Involvement and Engagement: Christians are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16); therefore, we will seek as individuals and as a church, wherever appropriate and by all means possible, to promote Christian values for the betterment of society.Spiritual Gifts: God has both called and equipped each member of the church with spiritual gifts for the edification of the body (I Corinthians 12:7); therefore, we will seek avenues whereby each member can exercise his gifts, talents and abilities in service to God under the direction of God-called professional and lay leaders (Ephesians 4:11-16).Fellowship: God has made us one body in Christ (Romans 12:5); therefore, we will maintain fellowship together, seeking to resolve conflicts in accord with Biblical directions, being careful always to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3), and striving to restore those who have fallen away from their commitments in a spirit of love, humility and gentleness (Galatians 6:1).Facility: God has blessed us with various facilities and equipment; therefore, we will maintain a clean, safe, attractive and functional environment for the fulfillment of our mission (II Chronicles 3-4).Stewardship: The work of the church is to be financed by the tithes and offerings of the members of the church; therefore, we pledge ourselves to give faithfully, systematically, cheerfully and generously toward the budget of the church and any special offerings as deemed needful by the body for the accomplishment of its mission, and to manage the offerings efficiently and effectively (II Corinthians 9:6-15; Malachi 3:8-12).Family Ministry: The family is the basic building block of the church and of society as a whole; therefore, we will seek ways to build and strengthen marriage relationships and the relationships between parents and their children, particularly during the sometimes difficult and always challenging adolescent years (Ephesians 5:21-6:4).

Parish NurseBarbara became a Christian when she was seven years old at Indian Springs Baptist Church and was baptized in Fall Creek. She was very active in her Youth Group as a teenager. At the beginning of her senior year in high school she didn’t have any idea what path her life would take, but God knew. Mainly because of her friend’s decision to go into nursing, Barbara applied and was accepted into ETSU School of Nursing. She worked in various areas over the next several years. All the while, God was guiding her path and preparing her to serve as the Parish Nurse for Calvary Baptist through professional and personal experiences. When first approached about starting the Parish Nurse, ministry, Barbara didn’t feel led to do it. God didn’t give up. After the death of both her parents and entering back into the work force, she began to be drawn toward this ministry. In June of 2006, the people of Calvary Baptist Church voted to start a Parish Nurse Ministry and voted Barbara as the Parish Nurse. God has blessed her tremendously through the people of Calvary Baptist Church and feels that she is the one being ministered to.Barbara met her wonderful husband of 22 years, Jess Bowling, at Calvary. They have been blessed with five children and nine grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys taking pictures, especially of God’s wonderful creation, including her grandchildren. She has been involved in the music ministry, Sunday School ministry, youth and children’s activities at Calvary and feels that all the while God was preparing her to minister as Parish Nurse.

Calvary Baptist ChurchChildren's DepartmentThe children of Calvary Baptist Church have multiple opportunities to come and learn about the Lord. Amazing Sunday School groups meet in our newly designed children's wing every Sunday at 9:15am. Classes are separated by age. Enthusiasm abounds in each class and children get to learn about God and have fun at the same time. It is a great time for your children to come to a safe environment and learn some of the most important lessons of their lives.Children also meet every Sunday for our "Calvary @ Borden Park" ministry. This ministry is currently meeting in the fellowship hall of the church every Sunday from 6pm - 7:30pm. It is a great time of high energy fun and games and Bible study. Snacks are provided each week. During the Spring when the time changes we will meet at Borden Park (on the corner of Lamont and Willow) from 6pm - 7:30pm. Children 1st - 6th grade are also welcome on Wednesday nights for RA's and GA's. During this time boys and girls are separated and learn about missions work throughout the world. They have opportunities to send gifts across the world to needy children. It is a great time of learning how to serve others through action!

Our HistoryCalvary Baptist Church traces its beginnings to the Summer of 1927 when a group of people met for worship in what is now known as Borden Park. Pastor Martin and Assistant Pastor Coldiron of First Baptist Church of Kingsport led in these worship services. In the Fall of 1927, Mr. George Hughes of Borden Mills gave permission for this group to meet in the Borden Mills lumber and tool shed, located at the corner of Willow and Lamont Streets. This group organized into a church on March 10, 1929, with Rev. and Mrs, S.S. Kreger, C. P. Powell, Sr., L. M. Parks, L. R. Vess, J. L. Ballard, Sr., Mrs. J. C. Owens, Bernice Powell and Henry Mashburn as charter members. On March 31, 1929, the Church extended a call to Rev. S.S. Kreger to become its first pastor. By August of 1929, the church reported 83 members, 33 by baptism and 50 by letter or statement. On December 31,1929, a committee met for the purpose of selecting a building site for a proposed church building. The Kingsport Improvement Company gave the church a lot measuring 100 x 150 feet in the area of our present location, and a loan of $12,000 was secured for building the new facility. The first worship service in the new facility was held on October 12, 1930.In late 1938 or early 1939, the church started a mission in Lynn Garden which is now the Lynn Garden Baptist Church. In 1946, the church voted to start a Sunday School mission which was later organized into the Springdale Baptist Church. In July 1947, a contractor was secured to build a new addition to the Church at an estimated cost of $59,000. This addition consisted of three floors to be used by the Nursery, Children and Youth Departments. By the late 1960's, continued growth necessitated the addition of a new sanctuary, as well as major renovations to existing facilities. In 1991, the former J. P. Stevens Clubhouse across the street from the sanctuary was purchased and is currently used as an activity center for the youth and the church-at-large.In 1978, Stanley M. Johnson was called to be the first full-time Minister of Music and Education and he continued in that position until his death in 1997. Mikel Caywood joined the staff in October 1998, and continues as Minister of Music and Education today. In 1980, Angela Smith was called as Youth Minister and served until 1982. Other full-time Youth Ministers are as follows: William Gunter, 1983-1989; Keith Flippin, 1990-1993; Chris Brown, 1994-1999, and Tiger Brooks, 2000-2008. Jon Hoover was called as Minister of Children and Youth in February 2010.Pastors of Calvary Baptist Church have been S.S. Kreger (March 1929 - March 1930); J. L. Trent (May 1930 - October 1944); J, A. Anderson (February 1945 - July 1946); Hugh R. Horne (September 1946 - February 1949); Sherman Woods (May 1949 - October 1951); Edwin H.
